Meet Anna and Robin. The fragility in Anna's voice has often been compared to early Nico. Robin accompanies her on bass and rhythm guitar. And keyboards. And banjo. And glockenspiel. Add to the mix Rob Allum, drummer from the High Llamas and string arrangements from Sean O'Hagan (High Llamas, Stereolab) and you have a Poney Express folk-pop mix unlike any other. They wanted to record their album in Glasgow, home of idols Belle & Sebastian. They ended up in Cardiff. Fifteen songs - all in French - recorded as if the group were playing live. No click track, no headphones. They are Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra, Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg: united against the world in music and love. Then of course there are the movie influences. Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man is infused in "Nobody", "Une Actrice" (An Actress) is steeped in the ambiance of Blow Up by Antonioni and "La Fugue" was inspired by Truffaut's 400 Blows. Add to this a certain nostalgia for Britain's mods (seen in the group's style of clothes and some of their favourite records) and you have a pretty good idea of what Poney Express are like: cinematic and sixties and pop and folk... and definitely Cardiff not Glasgow.
